Death Toll Reaches 103 in Philippine Election-Related Violence

At least 103 were killed in election- related violence in the Philippines since campaign began in January.

A Philippine Star online report said Friday that five people were killed in grenade blasts and shootings in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, which took the death toll past the 100 mark.

Election-related violence has claimed 98 lives in the run-up to Monday's congressional and local polls, according to an official count earlier.

More than 36 million Filipinos cast their votes on Monday in 234,259 polling stations nation-wide to elect 13 senators, 260 congressmen and over 17,000 local government officials and councilors.

Official results of the elections are expected to be released within two weeks.
