China to Launch Nationwide Education Project for Environmental Protection

A nationwide education project will be launched to improve social awareness about environmental issues facing China now, according to the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).

Xie Zhenhua, the SEPA director, told a press conference Friday that the social awareness of the negative side of the environment needs enhancing.

China's environmental protection faces problems as the environment nationwide is still worsening, Xie said.

China's major rivers, such as the Yangtze and Yellow rivers, are suffering the damage of the environment on their sources, with the lakes and wetlands along the rivers still shrinking, he said.

The reducing river flow, especially in north China, has led to severe droughts, shrinking vegetation and an expanding desert, he added.

The education project will be jointly launched by SEPA, the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Administrative Bureau of Radio, Film and Television.

"We hope every Chinese, including government officials, to be aware of the severe environment situation we are facing now and take an active part in environmental protection projects," said Liu Peng, a deputy head of the CPC's Publicity Department.
