Libyan, Cuban Leaders Hold Talks in Tripoli

Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi On Thursday held talks with President of the Cuban Council of State Fidel Castro on bilateral relations and cooperation and regional and international issues of common concern.

During the talks, Qathafi and Castro stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between Africa and Latin America, and Qathafi called for establishing regional groups to cope with rapid international development, the Libyan News Agency reported.

Also in the day, Libyan Secretary of Foreign Communication and International Cooperation Abdul-Rahman Mohammad Shalgam met with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Famon Perez Roque on ways of further promoting the bilateral relations in all fields.

Castro, who arrived in Tripoli on Wednesday for his first visit to Libya since 1977, is on a multi-nation tour, which has taken him to Algeria, Iran, Malaysia, Qatar and Syria.

He is expected to stop over in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon en route back to Havana. During his stay in Lisbon, which was not announced previously, Castro will meet with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres and President Jorge Sampaio.
