Nigerian President Meets Chinese Communist Party Delegation

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo met with a visiting delegation of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the presidential office Thursday in Abuja.

The delegation, led by Wu Guanzheng, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Shandong provincial committee of the CPC, is on a four-day goodwill visit to Nigeria at the invitation of Nigeria's ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).

During the meeting, Obasanjo said that China is a great nation, emphasizing that it has provided enough food to its huge population of about 1.3 billion, which was described by the president as a miracle.

Noting the Human Rights Report on China by the United States government, which accused China of violating human rights, Obasanjo said that the right of survival is the most fundamental right of human being.

China is a showcase that the most basic human rights of its people are well protected, he said.

The president also stressed that there are no human rights at all without the right of survival.

Mentioning that he has visited China more than eight times£¬Obasanjo said that he is always amazed at the great changes taking place in China during each of his visits.

He said that he is looking forward to his China visit scheduled for later this year.

On the same occasion, Wu conveyed to Obasanjo good wishes from Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

Wu thanked the Nigerian government for its valuable support to China at the United Nations' Human Rights Conference in April this year.

He also commended the great changes taking place in Nigeria under the leadership of Obasanjo after the country's return to the civilian rule in May 1999.

Among dignities attending the meeting were Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Liang Yinzhu£¬ PDP's National Chairman Barnabas Gemade and PDP's National Secretary Okwesilieze Nwodo.

Nigeria is the second leg of the CPC delegation's three-nation tour of Africa. They have concluded visit to Tunisia and will also visit Morocco after Nigeria.
