Rapid Development of Mass Media in Tibet

The mass media in the Tibet Autonomous Region is now in an unprecedented period of development, according to statistics.

The region now has 23 kinds of newspapers, 76 periodicals, two radio stations, 36 medium and short wave translator stations, three wireless and cable TV stations.

The region also has 78 TV translator stations at or above the country's level and 2,344 township and village level radio and TV stations.

As one of the major media organizations in Tibet, the Tibet Daily is now published in both Tibetan language and Chinese. The media group also publishes another smaller newspaper and a journal. It has 400 employees.

The Tibet People's Radio Station now provides cablecasting and programs of frequency modulation to 68 percent of the region's total population.

At present, 63 percent of Tibet's total population can watch Tibet Television Station's programs.

In addition, the Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, China National Radio and other central media have had correspondents in the region.
