Cambodian FM Visits Russia for Cooperation, PM's Moscow Trip

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov met his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong here Wednesday to discuss the cooperation between their countries and a visit by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to Russia this year.

The Cambodian prime minister will visit Russia in the autumn, very likely in September, which will give an added impetus to the development of Russo-Cambodian ties, Ivanov told reporters after his talks with Hor.

The Cambodian minister, who arrived here Tuesday for an official visit, said that several bilateral agreements are to be signed during Hun Sen's trip to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various spheres.

During Wednesday's meeting, the two sides agreed that the relations between the two countries had reached a new level. Russia regards Hor's visit as "an important stage in the development of bilateral relations," Ivanov said.

Russia and Cambodia keep a vigorous political dialogue and cooperation in the international arena, "particularly in the United Nations and the Asia-Pacific region," he said.

"It is of fundamental importance that we jointly declare for the strengthening of the United Nations role and observance of the U.N. Charter and principles of international law," he stressed.

For his part, Hor Namhong said there is a common political will and resolve between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to strengthen bilateral relations.

He called for developing closer commercial and economic ties between the two countries.

The Itar-Tass news agency cited the Cambodian ambassador to Russia as saying that the two countries have similar positions on the international security and Cambodia stands for preserving the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty.

On Thursday, Hor Namhong will visit the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry and make a speech to students about the two states' ties and the current state of affairs in his country.

He will stay in Moscow till Friday and meet with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, the parliament's speakers and Co- Chairman of the Russian-Cambodian Intergovernmental Cooperation Commission Anvar Shamuzafarov to discuss business contacts and the payment of the Cambodian debts.

The two sides will also discuss a package of bilateral agreements on the scientific- technical cooperation and control over narcotics trafficking, which are being prepared for Hun Sen's visit.

After his Russian tour, Hor Namhong will fly to France and Belgium.
