Macao, Chongqing to Strengthen Cooperation

A delegation of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality is paying a three-day visit to Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to enhance economic and cultural cooperation between the two places.

The two sides signed Wednesday a series of agreements on cooperation in the fields of television transmission and pharmacy.

The campaign of developing west China will generate a large number of cooperative opportunities between Chongqing and Macao, said He Guoqiang, secretary of Chongqing Municipality Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

He said that Chongqing will further improve its transport and telecommunications conditions as part of the efforts to attract more overseas and domestic investment.

Macao hopes to treat Chongqing as a "bridgehead" to exploit the country's vast western part, said Francis Tam Pak Yuen, secretary for economy and finance of the SAR government.

Macao will boost its economic links with the outside world to break through the limits caused by a small territory, he said.

The cooperation between Macao and Chongqing will be mutually beneficial, as Macao has a free economy and Chongqing is rich in natural resources, the official noted.

Macao has set up more than 30 enterprises covering agriculture, real estate and service industry in Chongqing by the end of March, with a combined investment of more than 110 million U.S. dollars.

The Chongqing delegation led by He will meet with representatives of Macao's economic circles before it leaves the SAR on Thursday.
