China to Encourage Domestic Art Performance Agencies to Run Overseas Businesses

Vice Minister of Culture Meng Xiaosi said China will encourage big domestic art performance agencies to run businesses overseas, in a bid to build up an international marketing network for promoting Chinese cultural industry.

The vice minister addressed the issue at an ongoing national working conference here. She said that her ministry will support local and non-governmental organizations to shoulder the work of cultural exchange.

To establish agencies that manage art performance and exhibitions internationally will help the country's cultural industry to prosper, she said.

"Actually, non-governmental channels of cultural exchange have made noticeable progress in recent years," said the vice minister.

Official statistics show that more than 90 percent of art performance and exhibitions staged outside China in the past five years were managed by non-governmental organizations.

A recent circulation issued by the Ministry of Culture allows local and private agencies to direct cultural exchanges with other countries with less complex approval procedures.

Meng promised that the ministry will mainly focus on big projects involving international fame whereas other projects will be solely handled by local governments and non-governmental agencies.

In addition, the ministry will invite bids for some big exchange projects to try to raise more funds, she added.
