Third Fishing Ban in South China Sea to Start Soon

A two-month summer fishing ban in the South China Sea, the third of its kind so far, will be enforced from June 1.

All fishing operations, except gill-netting and angling, will be banned in South China Sea waters north to 12 degrees north latitude from June 1 to August 1, according to a circular issued by the Administration for Supervision of Fishing and Port Affairs in the South China Sea under the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture.

China adopted an absolute fishing ban in the East and Yellow seas in 1995. The moratorium sparked an annual rise in total output for aquatic products in related areas.

Fishing resources in the South China Sea, which contains one fourth of China's aquatic products, have dwindled due to overfishing in the past few years.

In 1999, China also initiated the first fishing ban in the South China Sea. The two fishing bans have so far shown encouraging results, according to the circular.
