New Yellow River Dam Playing Multiple Roles

The Xiaolangdi Hydraulic Project over the Yellow River, in central China's Henan Province, is beginning to play its multiple roles as designed, according to local experts.

It marks the turning point in the control of China's second largest river, they noted.

The dam, which stands 30 kilometers north of Luoyang, is the largest ever hydraulic project on the river, with the functions of controlling floods, curbing ice, reducing mud, irrigating farmland, supplying water and generating power.

The experts said the Yellow River is the most successfully controlled among all the major rivers in China.

Since January 2000, three of the six power generating units have been put into operation and generated 1.5 billion kwh of electricity so far. Once all the six generators are installed, the plant will have a generating capacity of 1.8 million kilowatts.
