Slovenia to Help W. China Province Develop Karst Area

Vladmir Gasparic, Slovenian ambassador in China, said Tuesday his country attaches importance to cooperation with southwest China's Guizhou Province in development karst areas.

Gasparic, who is traveling in Guizhou, said both Slovenia and Guizhou have vast karst (limestone landforms containing deep caves) areas, and the two sides are ideal partners for the development of Guizhou's karst region.

With good experience in developing karst areas, Slovenia is confident that the cooperation will be a success, Gasparic said at a meeting with Vice-Governor Ma Wenjun of the province.

Experts from Slovenia have already made a series of research tours of the karst area in Guizhou. The two sides will launch a five-year scientific and technological cooperation program in the fields of returning farmland to grass and forests as well as agricultural development technology.

More than 90 percent of the land in Guizhou is mountainous, of which 73 percent has a karst topography.
