Li Peng Meets ROK DelegationChina's top legislator Li Peng made the remark here Wednesday in a meeting with a delegation from the 21st Century Northeast Asia Research Association of the ROK National Assembly, headed by its chairman Kwon Chul-Hyun. Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), noted that China pays great attention to the healthy development of bilateral cooperative partnership, and since the two countries forged diplomatic ties over eight years ago, bilateral relations have witnessed overall and rapid development. At present, he said, the two countries have kept high-level exchanges and contacts, and they are expanding all-round cooperation in various fields such as economy, trade, science and technology, and strengthening coordination in international and regional affairs. Meanwhile, there are active exchanges between China's NPC and the ROK National Assembly, Li added, pointing out that bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields are moving forward unprecedentedly. Expressing satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations, Li noted that there is still great potential for the development of such relations. He stressed that China upholds the multi-polarization of the world and economic globalization. China holds that all countries, big or small and strong or weak, are equal members of the international community, and the world should not be manipulated by a single country or a small number of countries, Li stressed. Economic globalization is both an opportunity and a challenge for China, he added. Li said China is concerned about the situation on the Korean peninsula, and hopes an independent and peaceful reunification can be realized. Touching upon his coming visit to the ROK in late May, Li said he will meet with ROK leaders and people of different walks of life, and hopes that the visit can contribute to the development of the bilateral cooperative partnership. Li asked Kwon to convey his regards to ROK National Assembly Speaker Lee Man-Sup. Li also briefed the delegation on China's people's congress system and domestic situation. Kwon passed on Lee's greetings to Li and voiced admiration for China's rapid political and economic development. He said he hoped that exchanges and cooperation between the two parliaments, and the traditional friendship between the two peoples can be further strengthened. The delegation is here at the invitation of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee. The Committee's Vice-Chairwoman Li Shuzheng chaired the working talks with the delegation.
