HK Police to Strive for Excellence: Official

The Hong Kong police force is committed and well prepared to strive for excellence to the services provided to the public, a senior police officer said Wednesday.

Hong Kong's Commissioner of Police Tsang Yam-pui said while addressing a luncheon that the overall crime rate of Hong Kong remained low in 2000.

The overall crime rate and violent crime reports dropped by seven and 10.7 percent respectively in the first four months this year when compared with the corresponding period last year, he noted.

"The detection rate reached 42.5 percent which was 1.9 percent higher than that of last year," he said.

Tsang noted that with the rapid growth in the Internet and information technology together with the trend of "globalization," it might provide opportunities to the unscrupulous elements to jeopardize the society.

However, the official pledged that the police had established and maintained a clear strategy for ensuring safety and stability of the society, and are taking a series of measures to this end.
