Beijing's Bid Evaluated as High Quality

Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games was evaluated as a "high quality" one which would leave a unique legacy to China and sport, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday in Lausanne.

The IOC evaluation commission said in their report of five candidate cities it is confident that Beijing could organise an excellent Games.

"The combination of a good sports concept with complete Government support results in a high quality bid," the report said.

The evaluation team, who toured Beijing three months ago, noted the process and pace of change taking place in China and Beijing and the possible challenges caused by population and economic growth in the period leading up to 2008.

However, they said they believe "these chanllenges can be met".

"There is an environmental challenge but the strong Government actions and investment in this area should resolve this and improve the city," it said.

Report Satisfied

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bid Committee said that they are satisfied with the evaluation report released here today on the five candidate cities by a special commission of the International Olympic Games (IOC).

"Today is a good day for the people of Beijing and for the Olympic Movement, " said officials from the Beijing Bid Committee.

The IOC Evaluation Commission concluded in its report that a 2008 Games in Beijing will "leave a unique legacy to China and to Sport."

"The people of Beijing and of China should be proud, "added the Beijing officials.

The IOC evaluation report reinforces the point that political factors will not play a part in the selection of the host city, with which Beijing bidding officials said they're very satisfied.

He Zhenliang, member of the IOC Executive Committee, said the IOC's evaluation report is "objective" and the conclusion they made is "fair".
