Gap Between Rich-Poor Must Be Narrowed, WTO SaysWorld Health Organisation Director-General Gro Harlem Brundtland opened the WHO annual assembly Monday with a warning that the gap between the world's haves and have-nots must be closed.Priorities must be to make medication and health care available to all, produce an effective strategy for feeding the world's starving children, and tackle vigorously Africa's HIV problem, she said. The WHO and its member states had to assume a leading role in this, she told delegates from 191 countries attending the Geneva- based assembly which runs through May 22. Research was another area where full international cooperation had to be exploited. "The information resulting from research is a global public good, just as health technology must be considered a global public good," she said. "We are here at a time of unprecedented opportunity for global health. We must act now. This window of opportunity may close at any time." |
