Model Competition Aims High

Although China's fashion modeling industry has a 20-year history , models whose expertise is advertising made their debut in the Chinese market only recently , according to the latest Beijing Review.

Sponsored by the Cultural Market Development Center under the Ministry of Culture, the 2001 China Advertising Model Competition , the first of its kind in China, was inaugurated in Beijing on March 22.

According to Beijing Guanya Advertising Model Co. , the competition's co-sponsor, the competition aims to find and foster professional advertising models up to international standards, help domestic and overseas enterprises set up better corporate identities and promote China's modeling industry to conform to international practices.

Differentiating from previous modeling competitions , which looked at a model's height and on-the-spot performance, the advertising modeling competition mainly focuses on a model's appearance, body shape , performance potential and social image. The competition attempts to give an all-faceted interpretation of the fashion concept of the new century.

A group of celebrities from modeling agencies , movies and television, and advertising circles will serve as competition judges. Pre-final selections will be held in Beijing , Shanghai , Shenyang , Guangzhou, Chengdu and Xi'an. Selection winners , a total of 50 models , will take part in the finals , and the winner will be crowned "China's No.1 Advertising Model." The finals and awards ceremony are to be held in Beijing this October.
