Ahmed Maher Sworn in as New Egyptian FM

Ahmed Maher, a former Egyptian ambassador to the US, was sworn in as new foreign minister before President Hosni Mubarak in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh on Tuesday, Egypt's state television reported.

Maher was appointed to the post to replace Amr Moussa, who is to become secretary general of the Cairo-based Arab League (AL).

The 62-year-old veteran diplomat had been acting as director of Arab-African Technology Aid Fund in the AL since he left the post of ambassador to the U.S.

Moussa, 64, served as foreign minister for 10 years. He was chosen in March to head the 22-member pan-Arab forum for a five- year term.

He will take over from fellow countryman Esmat Abdel-Meguid, also his predecessor as Egyptian foreign minister, to start his duty on Wednesday.
