PLA Chief of General Staff Meets Tonga Military Officer

Fu Quanyou, chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), said Tuesday that China is willing to develop the friendly and mutually beneficial relationship with Tonga on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.

Fu, also a member of the Central Military Commission, said the Chinese government attaches importance to its relations with Tonga, in a meeting with Tau'aika Uta'atu, commander of National Army of Tonga.

Fu said relations have been developing steadily in recent years since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1998.

Fu expressed his appreciation to Tonga for its adherence to the one-China principle.

The bilateral military relations have also been developing smoothly, Fu said, adding that the Chinese side is satisfied with the status of military ties and holds a positive attitude for future development.

Fu also briefed the guest on China's army building and its defense policy.

Uta'atu shared Fu's view on bilateral military ties, saying he hopes the two sides will further their mutual understanding and promote friendly military exchange.

Prior to the meeting, Fu held a welcome ceremony for the Tonga guest.

Uta'atu, who arrived in Beijing on Sunday on an official goodwill visit at the invitation of Fu, is the first Tonga commander of the national army to visit China since the establishment of diplomatic ties.
