Popularizing Scientific Knowledge, Promoting Social Development: Commentary
With the approval of the State Council, the National "Science and Technology Activity Week" will be held jointly by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee and the Chinese Association of Science and Technology in the third week of May each year beginning from 2001.
This is an important move taken to comprehensively implement the strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education and accelerate scientific and technological progress of the whole society under the new circumstance in implementing Comrade Jiang Zemin's important thinking as contained in the "three represents" (the CPC represents the requirement to develop advanced productive forces, an orientation toward advanced culture and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people in China), and is an important decision made by the Chinese government to boost scientific and technological progress and promote social development, it is of extremely important significance in carrying forward the scientific spirit, disseminating scientific thinking, popularizing scientific and technological knowledge and advocating scientific methods. We express our warm congratulations on the holding of the First Science and Technology Week.
Science and technology are the steps toward the progress of human civilization. Since time immemorial, each evolution made in human society has been inseparably related with science and technology. Science and technology, as the primary productive forces, have not only relieved human beings of ignorance and brought them into the civilized society, but also have greatly expanded their ability to utilize, transform and control nature. In order to better implement the strategy of developing the country through science and education, we should persist in carefully organizing rich and colorful scientific and technological activities, publicizing the principles and policies of the Party and State concerning scientific and technological development, displaying the latest achievements in scientific and technological progress and kindling the masses' enthusiasm for extensive participation in such activities, so that they will feel the inseparable relations of science and technology with their own work and daily life, learn scientific and technological knowledge therefrom and enhance their scientific attainments.
It is especially necessary to conduct the popularization of science among the teenagers, this is a foundation measure for developing China's undertaking of science and technology. Youngsters are the future of the motherland. It is necessary to attract their participation in the Science and Technology Activity Week and regard the popularization of scientific knowledge among youngsters as one of the important contents. In today's world, the numerous problems facing humankind are all closely related with science and technology. In an effort to meet the challenge posed by new technological revolution and industrial revolution, the governments of various countries around the world are losing no time in formulating their development strategies in the new century, seizing the commanding height for the development of science, technology and the economy and regarding the building up of scientific and technological strength and innovative capability as the key to enhancing international competitive edge. Talented people are the core of the development of scientific and technological undertakings. Only when talented people come out in large numbers can our cause of modernization be flourishing and growing. In China today, the concept that "science and technology are the primary productive forces" has taken deep root in the hearts of the people, the strategy of reinvigorating the country through science and education has become the basic national policy for China'' development. We must firmly grasp the excellent opportunity offered by contemporary new scientific and technological revolution to train and bring up millions of high-level scientific and technological professionals, so as to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation in the new century.
Launching a mass scientific and technological activity through holding the Science and Technology Activity Week to establish and promote a strong atmosphere characterized by loving, stressing, learning and using science in the whole society will definitely result in the extensive popularization of scientific and technological knowledge and the great enhancement of the quality of the general public. This will play an enormous role in boosting our socialist ethical and cultural progress and the smooth implementation of the strategy of revitalizing the country through science and education.
