Over 1,000 People Move Out of Three Gorges Area

More than 1,000 people living in the reservoir area of the Three Gorges Project Monday boarded ships to migrate to Rudong County in Jiangsu Province, east China.

The local migration department of the southwest China municipality said that this is the year's first and largest migration drive. By the end of this September, a total of 50,000 people in Chongqing will have moved to other regions in east and central China.

The more than 1,000 people are from 221 families in Guling Township of Yunyang County, and they are expected to arrive at the new homes on May 18, said a local official.

Some 15,000 people in Yunyang will move out this year, the official said.

A total of one million people will leave their homes in the Three Gorges Project area on the Yangtze River, where construction of the world's biggest dam is in full swing.
