Troops Repel Rebel Attack on Northern Town, Killing DozensAngolan government troops repelled a rebel attack on the northern town of Calambata, killing dozens of rebel soldiers and capturing voluminous war material, the official newspaper Jornal de Angola reported on Monday.The government troops suffered three deaths, including two militia soldiers and one policeman, during the battles that took place last week in the town located only 30 kilometers to Mbanza- Congo, capital of the Zaire Province. According to the newspaper, the rebel soldiers, in uniforms of the Angolan National Police, attacked the town of Calambata last week. It was reported that the rampant attacks launched by the rebels led by Jonas Savimbi in the northern region since March 2001, has provoked a massive decampment from the area to Songololo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. |
