Chinese Vice-President Meets Hungarian Defense Minister

China is ready to further exchanges and cooperation at various levels and in different fields between China and Hungary and their armed forces, so as to achieve greater development in the new century for such relations.

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao made the remark Monday afternoon in a meeting with visiting Hungarian Defense Minister Szabo Janos, saying that such efforts should be based on the principle of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and non- interference in each other's internal affairs.

Noting that there is a traditional friendship between the two peoples, Hu said that Hungary was one of the first countries in the world to recognize the new China.

In recent years, Hu said that bilateral relations have made new progress with concerted efforts from both sides, and bilateral cooperation in politics, economy, science and technology has expanded gradually.

He expressed China's appreciation for the Hungarian government' s "one China" position.

Hu stressed that China and Hungary have no fundamental conflicts of interest and the development of bilateral overall friendship and cooperation is in the fundamental interest of the two peoples.

Expressing his admiration for China's great achievements in its modernization drive, Szabo said this is his first visit to China and he has got to know China's accomplishments during this trip.

He said that Hungary and China enjoy very good relations, as the two countries set up their diplomatic ties as early as in 1949.

Although far away from each other, Szabo said, bilateral relations should be maintained and developed, and his country is willing to further its friendship and cooperation with China.

He also noted that there have been friendly relations between the two armed forces, and they have established a mechanism for regular exchanges of visits, which has promoted mutual understanding.

He said he is convinced that relations between the two armed forces will see greater development in the new century.

Szabo is here as a guest of Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian.
