Ethiopian Party Condemns Slaying of Security Chief

The dominant group in Ethiopia's ruling coalition has condemned the weekend "assassination" of the country's intelligence chief Kinfe Gebre-Medhin, official media reported on Monday.

The central committee of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) late Sunday described the killing as a "crime committed against the people of the country" and as a "cowardly act."

Kinfe, a close ally to Primer Minister Meles Zenawi, was shot dead on Saturday morning as he arrived at the army officers' club in Addis Ababa.

The assassin was another key TPLF figure, Major Tsehaye Wolde-Selasie, who was in hospital on Monday being treated for bullet wounds sustained as he tried to escape. The motive behind the murder was not clear.

The central committee of the regional council of the northern Tigray region as well as TPLF war veterans have also condemned what they too described as an assassination, according to the Ethiopian News Agency.
