EU Decides to Establish Diplomatic Ties With DPRK

The European Union (EU) said Monday that it has decided to establish diplomatic ties with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) after having consulted its member states.

An EU spokesman told the press that the decision aims to support reconciliation in the Korean peninsula and help the DPRK with its food and health problems.

Earlier this month, an EU mission went to visit the DPRK. The mission included Swedish Prime Minister Goeran Persson and EU Foreign Relations Commissioner Chris Patten.

It was the first high-level visit by the European Union to the DPRK.

So far, 13 of the 15 EU member states have established diplomatic relations with the Asian country.
