Top Legislator Meets Deputy Speaker of Kuwaiti Parliament

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), said Monday afternoon that developing China-Kuwait ties is in the interest of the two peoples.

At a meeting with Meshari J. Al-Anjeri, deputy speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait, and his party, Li said the friendship between the Chinese and Kuwaiti people dates back to ancient times, and the two countries, since they forged diplomatic ties, have conducted fruitful cooperation in political, economic and other fields.

China attaches importance to ties with Kuwait, Li said, adding that the two countries boast good political relations, complementary economies and vast potential for cooperation, and to further bilateral friendship and cooperation is in the fundamental interest of the two peoples.

He said China and Kuwait share identical or similar views on many major international and regional issues, and they have always supported and cooperated with each other in international affairs.

Li voiced his appreciation for the Kuwaiti government's consistent stand on the "one China" policy, and its valuable support for China on issues like human rights.

Pointing out that China pursues an independent foreign policy of peace, Li said China advocates a multipolarization of the world, equality among countries, big or small, strong or weak, and rich or poor, and a peaceful resolution of disputes among different countries.

Li said China supports Kuwait's efforts for safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and supports an early resolution of issues left over by the Gulf War on the basis of relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will make its own efforts for an early restoration of peace and stability in the Gulf region, added Li.

Stating that the NPC and the Kuwaiti National Assembly enjoy very good relations, Li said that the Chinese side places great importance on the development of friendly and cooperative relations between the two parliaments, hoping that exchanges between the two legislative bodies can further promote the development of Sino-Kuwaiti relations.

Conveying Kuwaiti Parliament Speaker Jasim Mohammad Al-Kharafi' s greetings to Li, Al-Anjeri recalled that Kuwait was one of the first Gulf countries to set up diplomatic ties with China, and the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations was only a few days ago.

He said bilateral relations have moved forward from good to better, and cooperation in economic and political fields has developed steadily.

He stressed that Kuwait supports China's territorial integrity and reunification, and will always abide by the "one China" policy.
