CCB Non-Performing Loans Down 0.5 Percent

The China Construction Bank (CCB) announced Monday that in the first quarter of this year its non-performing loans decreased by 0.5 percent from the end of 2000.

A CCB spokesman said that the bank will be able to realize its target of lowering non-performing loans by two percentage points this year.

He said that at the beginning of this year, the bank produced ten measures aimed at cutting the non-performing loans by two percentage points within the year, and all of the bank's branches have established special institutions for handling non-performing assets.

So far, the bank has made efforts to restructure extant credit, reinforce the management of non-performing assets, establish related rules and regulations, ensure that new loans remain sound, and set up effective encouraging and restraining mechanisms.

He said that the CCB has made the improvement of asset quality the top task of the bank, and thanks to the efforts made in this respect, the bank's credit quality has maintained good momentum.
