New Method of Analyzing Chemicals in Traditional Chinese Medicine

A new device nicknamed as the "fingerprint picture technology" has successfully been employed to analyze the chemical components of Chinese traditional medicine, according to an international forum held Sunday in Beijing.

With this technology, it is easy to find out the categories and quantities of the chemical components contained in Chinese traditional medicine, said Luo Guo'an, a professor at Qinghua University specializing in this field.

The results produced by the analyzer turn out to be pictures similar to fingerprints, and the this method is thus called " fingerprint picture technology," he added.

For most Chinese traditional medicines, the chemical composition has not yet been ascertained, said Luo, stressing that this technology may help people accurately analyze the medicines, and the "fingerprint pictures" may clearly reflect the medicines' quality.

"The fingerprint pictures can be seen as 'chemical bar code labels' for Chinese traditional medicines," he said.

This technology has been accepted worldwide, and is expected to help facilitate the export of Chinese traditional medicine products, Luo said.

Titled the "Chinese Traditional Medicine and Natural Medicine International Forum", this event is attached to the ongoing China Beijing International Hi-Tech Industries Week.

This technology is of great significance for the modernization of Chinese traditional medicine, said experts attending the forum, expressing the hope that it would be extensively promoted.
