Ghanaian Govt. Appeals for Constraint Amid ViolenceThe Ghanaian government Saturday renewed its urge on the country's youth to exercise restraint in the wake of Wednesday's soccer tragedy which killed about 127 people.Anyone violates the law will be punished, said Ghanaian Minister for Media Relations Elizabeth Oghini, appealing the youth to be constraint on the alleged over-reaction by the police in managing the accident. Oghini said the government has been reinforcing various police stations across the capital city of Accra in preparation of further attacks by the angry young men, who accuse the police of using of teargas unnecessarily which actually caused the stampede. "The state has the machinery to deal with people who would want to disturb the peace," she added. On Saturday, many young men stopped cars for policemen, and continued their threat to take retaliatory actions if the government did not withdraw the police before the eyes of the public. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Alhaji Malik Yakubu also made a strong appeal for calm, saying it is not proper to "make the police an object of hate" even if the 75 officers deployed at the stadium are to blame in part for the tragedy. |
