Macedonia Renews Attacks on Albanian Rebel Positions

Macedonia's security troops Saturday renewed attacks on positions held by ethnic Albanian rebels after a one-day government-declared cease-fire expired, said reports from Skopje, capital of Macedonia.

The army hit the villages of Slupcani and Vaksince, and about 30 extremists were killed in heavy bombardment and two captured in the fighting, military spokesman Blagoja Markovski was quoted as saying.

He said that tanks, helicopter gunships and artillery were used in the offensives, bringing heavy losses to the separatists.

The new flare-up came one day before the parliament's expected approval of a new national unity government, which aims to guarantee Macedonia's security and stability.

In a televised address on Saturday night, Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski vowed "the new government will continue to fight" till the insurgents are driven out of the country.
