Three East African Countries Sign Lake Victoria Pact

A total of 15 cities around the Lake Victoria basin under the East African Community (EAC) have signed an agreement with the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) on measures to protect the lake, the New Vision newspaper reported on Sunday.

Speaking at the closing of the Lake Victoria Region Environment workshop in Uganda, Pelle Persson, head of the SIDA, said the agreement shows Sweden's dedication to helping East African countries take sufficient environmental protective measures.

"We are aiming at both the protection of the lake from exploitation, pollution and also improve the transport system to benefit the three countries under the EAC," he said.

Persson said that a waste treatment plant would be established in each of the cities around the lake.

"Because of the dumping in the lake by the industrialists, we intend to set up a waste treatment plant on every basin in the three countries. This is aimed at protecting the lake from pollution," he said.
