Shanghai Helps Yunnan Develop EducationShanghai, China's financial center, has spent 7.61 million yuan (917,000 U.S.dollars) last year to help over 100 middle and primary schools in southwest China's Yunnan Province.Since the Chinese government initiated the project that schools in the economically developed eastern area help their counterparts in west China, Shanghai has helped Yunnan's education with its advantages in economy, personnel and science and technology. In 2000, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission selected 100 middle and primary schools to help schools in poor areas in Yunnan. The 19 district and county educational departments in Shanghai helped establish 13 "Hope Primary Schools" in Yunnan, reconstructed 34 middle and primary schools and trained over 10, 000 middle and primary school teachers. At the end of last year, Shanghai opened a distance education network, which is the first of its kind in China, and has started training teachers in Simao city, Honghe and Wenshan prefectures in Yunnan. The municipal Education Commission also sent 60 teachers to the schools for one year in the above three areas. Since the central government designated Shanghai as Yunnan's counterpart supporter in the 1970s, Shanghai has provided support in education, health care finance and manager training.
