Iraqi Sunken Tanker not to Be Salvaged

An Iraqi sunken oil tanker will not be salvaged because it could no longer pose threat to shipping and regional marine environment, the Gulf News daily reported on Friday.

The ill-fated Zainab, carrying more than 1,300 tons of smuggled oil, sank off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on April 14, and spilled more than 500 tons of oil into UAE's territorial waters.

According to the Dubai-based newspaper, remaining 800 tons of oil in the ship was pumped out by the Dubai port authorities last week.

The UAE, which suffered from serious oil leakage pollution due to tanker-sinking incidents, has said that it will confiscate all tankers smuggling Iraqi oil, ban them from sailing into its territorial waters and severely punish the violators.
