New Far East-Australia Shipping Route Opens

A container ship left Shanghai port Friday marking the opening of a new Far East-Australia shipping route.

The route is jointly operated by Shanghai Shipping Croup, Orient Overseas Corporation Ltd, and the U.S.-based ZIM shipping company.

The shipping companies use five 2,700 to 3,000-TEU container ships on the express shipping route docking at ports in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan and far east ports.

The route will shorten the shipping duration from 49 to 35 days from the Far East to Australia, 18 to 13 days from Shanghai to Australia, and 14 to 9 days from Hong Kong to Australia.

Statistics show that Sino-Australia import and export volume hit 1.96 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of this year, most of it via shipping.
