Chinese, Hungarian Defense Ministers Hold Talks

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met Friday with his Hungarian counterpart Szabo Janos.

Chi, also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said that Chinese and Hungarian people have enjoyed long-term friendship although the two countries are far apart, and the two countries have developed cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and other fields in recent years.

He noted that the Chinese armed forces have attached importance to developing relations with their Hungarian counterparts. He voiced his hope that with the common effort, the friendly relations between Chinese and Hungarian armed forces will be promoted.

Szabo said he was glad to visit China at the start of the new century. He said that both Hungary and China bear the responsibility of safeguarding peace and promoting development.

He expressed his belief that the visit would further mutual understanding so as to promote the relations between the two states and armed forces.

He noted that Hungary adheres to the One-China policy and supports China's reunification.

Szabo arrived here this morning at the invitation of Chi. Prior to talks, a ceremony was held to welcome Szabo and his party.
