China Basically Grasps 3rd Generation Mobile Communication Key Technology

China has basically mastered the third-generation of mobile communication key technology, and has thus put itself in the international forefront of competition in the field. This information was obtained from the Chinese Engineering Science and Technology Forum, held by the Chinese Academy of Engineering on May 10 and with "Third Generation Mobile Communication" as the theme

China has actively participated in the standardization-related work of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In June 1998, China submitted the technology TDSCDMA to ITU, which was accepted as a component of international standard and finally approved by ITU in May last year. To make this technology a real internationalized standard, China began in 1999 to take part in all the activities of the International Organization for Standardization (IOC), to promote the standardization of the network, base station, and terminal.

Last March, China also submitted to IOC the LASCDMA, a new technology with the autonomous intellectual property. As a member of the CDMA2000 technology series, China's LASCDMA, like other CDMA, is soliciting opinions from various quarters.

China began in 1998 to engage in the research and development oriented toward future wireless communication market and it had achieved important, phased progress in this field by the end of June 2000.
