China to Input Another 300 Bn Yuan for Western Development
China will further its western development strategy and intensify the construction of its key projects there. Based on the experience of 10 projects launched last year it plans to put another 12 key projects under construction with a total investment of 300 billion yuan.
The key projects to be for this year include: Qinghai-Tibet Railway, west-to-east gas pipeline from Xinjiang to the Yangtze River Delta, Longtan Hydropower station in Guangxi province, hinge water conservancy project in Bose, construction of electrolytic aluminum. And other nonferrous metals bases, Nirji hydro-junction project, mass-production of Yun-7 200A airplanes, ecological construction including returning land to forest, broadcasting and TV coverage and Telnet education in western region. In the meanwhile, initial phase construction of Xiaowan hydropower station in Yunnan province, harness projects of Tarim River and Hei River, railway construction in northwest and southwest, Qiaboqihai water control project in Xinjiang will be sped up.
China's Top Planner on Development of Western Region
China's western region will be a bright star playing a vital role in the future economic development of Asia, Zeng Peiyan, minister in charge of the State Development Planning Commission, said Wednesday in Hong Kong.
Speaking at the Fortune Globe Forum 2001, Zeng said the western region, with 70 percent of China's total land area and 30 percent its population, boasts rich natural resources and cultural relics.
