China Encourages Overseas Companies to Invest in Hi-Tech Sector: Li Peng

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said Thursday that China encourages overseas ventures to invest in the country's hi-tech sector.

Li told more than 60 international dignitaries who are here for the Beijing International High-Tech Industries Week, which opened Thursday, that the country will make a series of policies to attract overseas investors.

The NPC, China's legislature, will provide legal guarantee for the development of the hi-tech sector in the country, he said.

China cannot develop without the assistance of the world, and the prosperity of the world needs the efforts of China, Li said. He added that China is willing to cooperate with friends around the globe for a peaceful and prosperous new world.

Helmut Schmidt, former chancellor of Germany, said on behalf of the foreign dignitaries that they all hope the cooperation with China in economic and technology projects can be strengthened because such cooperation will benefit everyone involved.

The Beijing International High-Tech Industries Week is an annual event that started in 1997.
