Tourist Arrivals in Hong Kong Up 10.9 Percent in March

Hong Kong's tourists in March booked a 10.9 percent growth compared to the same period of last year, according to official statistics.

A total of 1,160,619 visitors entered Hong Kong in March, resulted from various promotion campaigns and special offers as well as the economic slowdown in the United States and the stalled recovery in Japan, said the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) Wednesday.

The cumulative arrivals from January to March 2001 reached 3, 197,036, up 7.8 percent on the same period in 2000, right in line with the forecast of the 7.8 percent growth target for 2001 overall announced by HKTB in February.

In March, tourist arrivals from Thailand grew the most by 43.3 percent, followed by Macao at 33 percent, India at 23.1 percent, South Korea at 20.1 percent, the Chinese mainland at 14.2 percent.
