Jiang Attends Luncheon by HKSAR Chief Executive
Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who is in Hong Kong for the Fortune Global Forum 2001, attended a banquet given by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) at the Government House Wednesday noon.

Entrusted by Jiang, Vice-Premier Qian Qichen made a speech at the banquet and spoke highly of the achievements scored in Hong Kong since its return to China nearly four years ago.

Qian said the principles of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law have been implemented comprehensively since Hong Kong's return. Under the leadership of the SAR government headed by Tung and with the support of the central government, Hong Kong has stood up against the adverse impact of the Asian financial crisis, overcome many other difficulties and maintained social stability and the vitality for economic growth.

The successful holding of the Fortune Global Forum in Hong Kong indicated, in a way, that Hong Kong as an international commercial center is attractive to the world business community, the international investors have interest and confidence in Hong Kong, he said.

Describing the implementation of the principles of "one country, two systems" as an unprecedented cause which requires painstaking efforts, Qian called for unity and hard work to do a good job of it. The basis of the unity is the love of the motherland and Hong Kong, under the prerequisite of supporting China's resumption of its exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and adhering to the " one country, two systems" principles and the Basic Law.

As long as the overwhelming majority of people are united, the cause will be a success, he said, hoping the Hong Kong people support Chief Executive Tung in his work and make concerted efforts to maintain stability, promote development and continue to sharpen Hong Kong's competitive edge so as to score new achievements in the new century.

Jiang's entourage, principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR and representatives from all walks of life in Hong Kong were also present at the banquet.
