China Captures Runners-up in Women Flying Saucer and Shooting Championships

The world women flying saucer and shooting championships were wound up in Cairo May 7. China took the runner-up by Chen Zhenru, Wei Ning and the 1996 Olympics Champion Zhang Shan with 202 targets. Russia was crowned the champion with 209 targets and Italy, the bronze medallist with 199 targets. Peking Opera Entertains Latin American Audience

The Peking Opera Troupe of central China's Henan Province is making a three-month performance tour to Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. The first performance turned out to be a great success in Colombia, April 26. No Lumbering But for Orchid Raising by a Tibetan

The Lisu Autonomous County of Weixi, Yunnan Province, is known for over hundred rare orchid varieties grown in wilderness as the "Land of Orchids" of China. However, many farmers began to dig up wild orchids for sale since a ban was placed on natural wood lumbering two years ago. While Dawa, a Tibetan lumberman, sold his properties to buy orchids and made himself simply a floriculturist of orchids. These have come by now to a market worth of over million yuan but not a single blade of the flower has he sold. He wants to build a large orchid nursery, with more new orchid rarities raised, to create a happy enjoyable sight of the flower.

Inner Mongolia Still Coping with a Difficult Time

Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is still in difficulty since last Spring's severe snow blizzards and sandstorm. This is especially so since decreased food stores and dwindling fodder reserves are being found and a difficult lambing season is in. By the end of April, a total of 1.09 bn yuan (about US$131m) had been allocated by the state and local governments as food and fodder relief supply and funds for disease prevention. Largest Stator Foundatin Manufactured in Harbin

A stator foundation, the largest component of the first water-wheel generator of 700 megawatt, has been manufactured by Harbin Electrical Machinery Limited Company in Harbin, capital city of China's Heilongjiang Province May 8, 2001. The foundation, with the diameter in 22 meters, 5.5 meters high and 200 tons in weight, was made for the water-wheel generating unit of 700 megawatt in the Three Gorges Hydroelectric Station.
