State Council Holds Executive Meeting

The State Council, China's cabinet, held its 38th executive meeting Wednesday to discuss and pass, in principle, the draft amendments to the 342nd and 410th articles of the Criminal Law and the draft of provisions on safety control over agricultural gene-modified living things.

Premier Zhu Rongji presided over the meeting.

The two amended articles of the Criminal Law are designed to curb illegal activities damaging forests.

The amendments will be revised by the State Council and then handed over to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for approval.

The participants agreed that it is imperative to stipulate specific rules governing the safety of farm-use gene-modified biology in the wake of China's forthcoming entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The provisions will be revised and afterwards put into force by the State Council.
