Rwanda, Seychelles Support Peaceful Solution to Cyprus Issue
Both Rwanda and Seychelles have voiced firm support for a peaceful settlement to the Cyprus issue based on the U.N. resolutions, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Tuesday.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Seychelles President France Albert Rene made the pledge respectively while receiving the credentials of Cyprus' High Commissioner to Kenya, Michalis Stavrinos, during ceremonies in the two countries.
Kagame expressed his gratitude for the Cyprus government's support for Rwanda in civil unrest, pledging that Cyprus can count on Rwanda's firm support for the settlement of the Cyprus issue under the principles of the international law and U.N. resolutions.
He further noted that he hoped bilateral relations would further advance in the fields of tourism and education.
Cyprus, an eastern Mediterranean island, has been divided into the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1974 when Turkey sent troops to occupy the northern third of the island in the wake of an Athens-backed coup seeking union with Greece.
Since then, repeated U.N.-sponsored peace efforts have been made to reunite the island under a bizonal bicommunal federal formula, but so far no tangible results have been achieved.
Receiving Stavrinos' credentials, Seychelles President Rene reiterated his country's unyielding support for the struggle of the Cypriot people for a peaceful settlement based on the U.N. resolutions.
