Uganda Reiterates Troops Withdrawal From CongoThe Ugandan government has decided that Uganda will withdraw its troops completely from 10 positions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) under the Lusaka Peace Agreement."The government has decided that Uganda remains a party to the Lusaka Peace Agreement and arrangements under it, the full implementation of which remains the only viable solution to the crisis in the DRC," said a statement from Ugandan Foreign Affairs Ministry available on Tuesday. However, the statement said that Uganda will continue to maintain a presence in Buta and Bunia in the DRC and deploy forces on the western slopes of the Rwenzori mountains until Uganda's security interests are addressed in accordance with the Lusaka Peace Agreement. The statement also said that Uganda called on all concerned warring parties to implement the agreement without any further delay. Uganda deployed troops in eastern DRC in 1998 along with Rwanda to back the rebels against the DRC government supported by Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia. |
