Qian came to Hong Kong in company with President Jiang Zemin to attend the Fortune Global Forum 2001 scheduled for May 8-10. Attending the ceremony were Henry Ying Tung Fok, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR. The work of the Liaison Office has been receiving support from Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, the SAR government and people from all walks of life in Hong Kong, Jiang said. He expressed his sincere thanks to them. Jiang described the use of the new office building in the first year of the new century as a "happy event," saying that this will encourage the staff of the Liaison Office to continue to carry out the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong," and a high degree of autonomy, and to fulfill the tasks entrusted by the central government. He said the Liaison Office will continue to support the chief executive and the SAR government to administer Hong Kong in accordance with the Basic Law, promote exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland, and make unremitting effort for the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.
