Senior Tibetan Official Meets UN Guest

Raidi, executive deputy secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee of the Communist Party of China, met Monday with Lai Shian Lung, an official of the Socio-economic Policy and Development Management Branch of the United Nations.

Lai came here to attend an international symposium on poverty eradication and environmental protection, which was held from May 4 to 6.

Raidi said that Tibet is currently stable and its economy is developing, adding that the nationalities living in the region are united and thus the border has been strengthened.

He attributed the current situation in Tibet to the leadership of the central government and the help of the peoples in the rest of China. However, Raidi stressed that the development of Tibet must rely on its own efforts.

Lai Shian Lung said that the work of poverty eradication has developed rapidly in Tibet, and the local government has also paid much attention to environmental and cultural protection, which was acknowledged by all participants of the symposium.

He added that Tibet was selected as the venue of the symposium because it has rich experience in poverty eradication and it can be learned from by other parts of the world.

Over 40 experts from more than 10 countries including Japan, India and the Philippines attended the symposium.
