Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen unveiled the board inscribed with the "Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" amid warm applause from some 400 attendants.

Qian came to Hong Kong in company with President Jiang Zemin to attend the Fortune Global Forum 2001 scheduled for May 8-10.

Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office, delivered a speech at the ceremony. He said Qian's chairing of the ceremony fully demonstrates the concern of the central government over the Liaison Office.

The work of the Liaison Office has been receiving support from Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, the SAR government and people from all walks of life in Hong Kong, Jiang said. He expressed his sincere thanks to them.

Jiang described the use of the new office building in the first year of the new century as a "happy event," saying that this will encourage the staff of the Liaison Office to continue to carry out the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong," and a high degree of autonomy, and to fulfill the tasks entrusted by the central government.

He said the Liaison Office will continue to support the chief executive and the SAR government to administer Hong Kong in accordance with the Basic Law, promote exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland, and make unremitting effort for the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

Among those present at the ceremony were over 20 heads of some provinces and ministries, as well as Ji Peiding, commissioner of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR and Xiong Ziren, commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison.

Some officials from the Hong Kong SAR government, noted figures from all walks of life in Hong Kong, and officials of some foreign consulates in Hong Kong also attended the event.

The new office building of the Liaison Office is located in the west of the Hong Kong Island. The Liaison Office removed into the new building from the Queen's Road East on the Hong Kong Island.
