Thai PM Expects Hong Kong Trip to Woo Investors

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has expressed wishes that his three-day official visit to Hong Kong will help create better understanding and enhance confidence in the Thai economy among foreign investors, the Thai News Agency reporter Tuesday.

Thaksin will leave Bangkok Tuesday afternoon for Hong Kong to attend the 2001 Fortune Global Forum as a guest speaker.

Thaksin said he hopes to use the forum to create better understanding among investors from around the world on direction and potential of the Thai economy, which is a key part of Asia.

Once the better understanding is created, foreign investors will feel confident in the Thai economy and more investment projects are expected to flow in, he said.

Investors' confidence would also help increase the country's competitiveness in the world market, which is a main goal of this trip to the Chinese special administrative region, noted the Thai premier.

Thaksin said that his keynote speech, titled "Next Generation Asia," at the forum would be divided into two parts, one on overall Asian prospect, and the other on the Thai economy, its problems and potential in the future.

Thaksin will meet with Chinese President Jiang Zemin Wednesday morning, with issues concerning bilateral ties and cooperation in various areas are expected to be discussed.
