Vice-premier Urges Tourism Development

China's Vice-Premier Qian Qichen recently urged tourism department to further develop tourism marketing and new programs to entertain tourists.

Qian made the urge in an recent inspection tour on holiday tourism in east China's Shandong province. From May 1 to 5, Qian inspected tourism sites and facilities in Qingdao, Weifang, Yantai, Weihai and Jinan.

Tourism plays an important role in the country's economic development and the improvement of people's life, he said.

In the first five days of the week-long International Labor Day holiday, the country has witnessed travel boom in nearly all of the scenic sites, said Qian.

He noted that Shandong has its own advantages to develop tourism industry, saying that local governments should consider the development of tourism as a new driving force in pushing ahead economic development.

While developing traditional sight-seeing, tourism departments should try all means to develop new tourism programs and products to attract tourists, said Qian, adding that tourism departments should also adopt measures and create favorable conditions, especially for attracting overseas tourists.
