Angolan Government Troops Recapture Rebel Logistic Base

The Armed Forces of Angola (FAA) have recaptured the town of Mavinga, a strategic logistic base for the rebels led by Jonas Savimbi in southeast Angola, the official news agency Angop reported Monday in Luanda.

A military source was quoted by the Angop report as saying that the government troops seized the town on May 1, causing various casualties on the rebel side and recapturing enormous quantity of war material.

According to the source whose name was not revealed, the FAA action aimed to impede the revitalization of the rebels' traditional logistic base with an airport near the town, and then repress the bellicose activities.

The town of Mavinga was first captured in 1990 by the government troops during the Zebra Operation, but it was then transformed into an area of cantonment for the rebels.

Since then, the town had served as one of the rebels' principal bases of logistic transshipment, as the airport had been used for the illegal traffic of ivory tusks and diamonds.
