Zambian President Dissolves Cabinet

Zambian President Frederick Chiluba announced on Friday night that he had dissolved his government following a sharp split of his cabinet over his unconstitutional third-term presidential bid.

"I have decided to dissolve cabinet. This decision includes the dissolution of all deputy ministers," Chiluba said in a televised speech.

Chiluba said he supported his party's position that the country should decide on the constitutional amendment to allow him to seek a third term.

However, the Zambian president said he is not yet the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD)'s candidate for president, thought he was re-elected as party leader at a MMD national convention last weekend.

Political observers here said Chiluba's speech came as some MMD members of parliament called for the impeachment of him on several counts of gross misconduct.

The move is supported by more than one-third of the 158 members of parliament.

Last week, Chiluba fired Vice President Christon Tembo and eight cabinet ministers for opposing his third-term plans, leading to an appeal of impeachment called for by them.
